Taking a screenshot is exceptionally easy nowadays, thanks to the smart design of some software applications. A good example is Cropper, which lets you take snapshots of the screen at a moment's notice. From targeting the area you wish to capture to saving the snapshot, everything can be done on the fly, directly on the desktop. It takes only a few seconds, regardless of what you need to capture.

The application is free and you can have it up and running in no time. It is compatible with the latest Windows platforms and it supports both 32 and 64-bit versions. Furthermore, you don't have to install any prerequisite tools or services and you don't have to sacrifice a significant amount of resources.

When launched, Cropper will place a transparent rectangle on your screen, which you can move and resize by clicking and dragging. Double clicking this rectangle will immediately capture anything you place it over. Snapshots are saved automatically. Of course, you can decide where to store them and in what format, before taking your snapshots. Alternatively, you can set the application to immediately print what you capture.

Right clicking the capture rectangle will reveal a series of useful options. For example, you can choose between several output formats in a sub-menu. Additionally, you can save the current size of the rectangle as a preset, if you will need the same dimensions in the future. Another useful feature is the possibility of creating thumbnails. This involves placing another rectangle, over the main one, which can be resized separately. When you take a snapshot in this mode, the application will save two images: the screenshot itself, as well as a thumbnail.

Cropper can serve various purposes, maybe even mode than other screenshot utilities. What gives this application an edge is the fact that you can use various hotkeys to adjust the capture rectangle with greater accuracy. This can be quite useful if you need to crop out sections of something, like vector graphics for example.

With its clean design and simple functionality, Cropper has many interesting uses when it comes to capturing the screen.

Pros

You can take screenshots of specific regions of the screen in just a few seconds. The application places a good number of controls at your disposal. It can also generate thumbnails, besides screenshots.

Cons

An option for snapping the rectangle over a window would be a welcomed addition.
